Description

Experience this moving account of the Irish Potato Famine, also known as the Great Hunger, a period of mass starvation, disease and death in 19th century Ireland. Allow yourself an hour to read a series of wall panels and view a 15 minute documentary film. You will also see a very rare artefact from this period - a Coffin Carrier which was used to bring coffins from the workhouses to the place of burial.

Feel free to avail of our coat rail (just keep valuables on your person) and enjoy the self-guided tour of our exhibition area. Allow at least 1 hour to complete the experience and avail of the seating in the exhibition rooms.
The story is presented in a series of 50 wall panels, each numbered sequentially.  The text is minimal and easy to understand. Enjoy wonderful 19th century photographs as well as comtemporary sketches and eyewitness accounts.
Feel free to take photographs and enjoy the birds eye view of St Stephen's Green.
The 15 minute documentary film starts at each quarter of the hour ( 00:00   00:15   00:30   00:45). There is seating for 10 people. The film gives a condensed account of the Famine story and can be viewed at any point.
At the end of the exhibition, you will also see a very rare 18th century Coffin Carrier which was used to bring coffins from the workhouses to the place of burial.
