The Dublin St. Patrick’s Festival tunes up with a full list of music events that take visitors from theatre seats to center stage. Dublin’s own rich musical history adds life to the already lively series of concerts and more at the St. Patrick’s Festival, with star turns from favorite (and tuneful) sons and daughters.
Grab your guitar and join the band on St Patrick’s Festival Trad Trails starting at 2 p.m. March 16-17 and 19. In a series of one-hour sessions, festival-goers are invited to play, sing and dance along with traditional Irish musicians performing at venues throughout the city center. Playlists and instruments will vary, but the Arts Council promises an “enriching cultural experience”. These seisiúns are free to attend and a must for Irish music lovers.
March 16 -- Socially conscious music lovers can give back to a charitable cause while experiencing great contemporary and traditional Irish music at “CEOL”, a benefit concert sponsored by Irish -anguage charity Seachtain na Gaeilge. Held at the Vicar Street concert venue, the concert’s diverse guest list includes radio stars Republic of Loose, Delorentos, The Flaws and others, all performing in the Irish language. Tickets are €20 and all profits go to children’s charity Barnardos.
March 16-17 -- The Kilfenora Céilí Band brings its traditional sound to the National Concert Hall in Dublin. As Ireland’s oldest performing Céilí, or folk, band at 102 years old, the 10-piece group’s performances transport listeners to rural Ireland’s vibrant musical past. Tickets for both nights range from €25 to €35 and can be booked at the National Music Hall’s website.
March 19 -- Irish accordionist Sharon Shannon takes the stage of the National Concert Hall for a St. Patrick’s Festival concert that fuses Shannon’s traditional music background with her love of new and global styles – from Cajun to Hip Hop! Book tickets online from €18 to €35 at the National Concert Hall's website.
From free outdoor events to nights of music in Dublin’s many concert venues, music’s role in the St. Patrick’s Festival hits all the right notes in 2011.
