Dublin Zoo: A mission of conservation

A modern mission of conservation, paired with a 180-year legacy, makes Dublin Zoo a family attraction with significance.

Much has changed for this historic compound since its opening in 1831, with gradual expansion resulting in today's modern complex covering more than 59 acres. Divided into areas which give visitors and animals ample space to move and explore, the Zoo features The World of Cats, World of Primates, The Kaziranga Forest Trail, Fringes of the Arctic, African Plains, Birds, Reptiles, Plants, Endangered Species, and the newly refurbished City Farm

The Farm exhibit's relaunch in May of 2010 was a joint venture with Agri Aware, a trust dedicated to raising awareness of agriculture's economic, social, environmental and cultural contributions to Ireland. All new features include new animals, interactive farming exhibits plus animal models and more.

Walking and tram tours are available daily, while regular feeding times for the Zoo's sea lion, penguin and other animal populations allow closer look at favorite species. For humans, mealtime at the Zoo is slightly more diverse, with full meals available at the Meerkat Restaurant as well as light snacks, coffees and tea in various kiosks and cafes situated throughout the park. Feeding the animals is never recommended, although a hardy flock of peacocks have staked out the Lakeside Cafe on the hunt for pizza, donuts and muffins.

Its location in Phoenix Park and proximity to the city center makes the Zoo an easy visit for tourists and locals, but unfortunately also an easy target. As recently as July 2010, a penguin was stolen from its exhibit by local pranksters. Fortunately, the animal was found just a few hours later and returned by Gardaí, Dublin's police force.

HelloDublin Tip: Parking is available in Phoenix Park, although local bus and train services offer easy access to the area. Tickets can be purchased at the Zoo entrance, and  family packages are available, as well as special prices for students (with ID) and Special Needs children and adults.
